September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the realities that many families face—my own included. Over the past eight months, my life transformed dramatically as my middle daughter went from celebrating her 15th birthday in January to being diagnosed and treated for cancer. This journey has been a rollercoaster of emotions, challenges, and triumphs.
Navigating a New Reality
Accepting my daughter’s diagnosis was one of the hardest moments of my life. Yet, I had to remain focused, juggling the responsibilities of running my businesses, prepping my oldest for college, and simply being a mom. It’s a lot to handle, and I know many entrepreneurs face similar challenges as they strive to balance personal and professional commitments.
What inspired me throughout this journey was my daughter’s resilience. She tackled her situation with extraordinary positivity and focused on her recovery while being surrounded by supportive family and friends. Their unwavering support reminded me of the importance of community in times of crisis.
Gratitude for Healthcare Heroes
I want to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and healthcare professionals who cared for my daughter. Their commitment and compassion made a world of difference. They treated my daughter as if she were their own, accommodating our needs and providing exceptional care.
As someone who works in the healthcare sector through my company, Medicalincs, and its nonprofit arm, Healthlincs, I’m motivated to continue advocating for complex care management and mental wellness support for children.
Celebrating Recovery
This month brings joyous news: my daughter has achieved cancer-free status. As we celebrate this wonderful update, we also reflect on the significance of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by shedding light on important statistics:
- Cancer is the #1 cause of death by disease for children in America.
- Early diagnosis is often difficult, but it can be life-saving.
- Every day, 42 American families hear the life-altering news that their child has cancer.
- Alarmingly, 44% of childhood cancer cases worldwide go undiagnosed.
How Entrepreneurs Can Cope as Caretakers
As entrepreneurs, we often wear many hats, and being a caretaker can add an overwhelming layer to our already busy lives. Here are strategies to help manage this dual role:
- Prioritize Self-Care: Caring for a loved one can drain your energy. Carve out time for yourself—through exercise, meditation, or simply unwinding with a good book.
- Set Boundaries: Communicate with your team and clients about your availability. It’s okay to take time off or delegate tasks when you need to focus on caregiving.
- Seek Support: Lean on your support system—family, friends, or professional networks. Don’t hesitate to ask for help.
- Stay Organized: Use tools and apps to track business responsibilities and caregiving tasks. A structured schedule reduces stress.
- Practice Mindfulness: Find moments of peace each day. Mindfulness helps you stay grounded during challenging times.
Taking Action for Childhood Cancer Awareness
- Educate Yourself and Others: Learn about childhood cancers and treatment advancements. The
National Cancer Institute
is a valuable resource. - Act on Early Detection: If you notice unusual symptoms, consult a physician without delay.
- Support Research and Services: Donate to organizations focused on childhood cancer research and support services.
- Advocate: Get involved at local, state, or global levels to advocate for children with cancer.
- Volunteer: Participate in events, fundraisers, or marathons supporting childhood cancer awareness.
- Show Your Support: Wear gold ribbon pins and share stories within your network to raise awareness.
Navigating entrepreneurship while being a caretaker is no small feat—especially during a health crisis. However, the resilience built during these times can empower us to make meaningful impacts in our families and communities.
Let’s come together to raise awareness for childhood cancer and support families navigating this difficult journey. Please share, like, and comment to spread the word. Together, we can make a difference.
